How Much Does Ground Protection Hire Cost?

blog

The honest answer: it depends

If you are searching for a fixed price list for ground protection hire, you will not find one here. Not because we are being evasive, but because ground protection is not a one-price-fits-all product. Hire costs vary significantly based on what you need, how much you need, how long for, and where you are.

What we can do is explain exactly what affects the price, so you can budget accurately and avoid surprises. Getting the right protection matters far more than saving a few pounds on the hire. A failed surface costs thousands in delays, ground restoration, and reputational damage. A few quid saved on cheaper mats is quickly wiped out the moment a lorry gets stuck.

Product type: the single biggest factor

Not all ground protection is the same, and neither is the price.

Heavy-duty track mats such as PowerTrax 60 and TuffTrak cost more to hire than lighter alternatives. These are the panels you see on construction sites where HGVs, cranes, and heavy plant machinery need reliable access across soft ground. Each panel weighs 30 to 75kg, handles loads up to 150 tonnes, and requires specialist transport and handling. If your site has vehicle traffic heavier than a transit van, this is the category you need. There is no cheaper substitute that will do the job.

Pedestrian walkways sit at the other end of the spectrum. WalkOvers, LiteTrax, and LuxTrax marquee flooring are lighter, faster to lay, and more economical per square metre. They are built for foot traffic, wheelchair access, and light trolleys. Because the panels are smaller and lighter, transport costs are lower and installation is quicker, all of which keeps the hire cost down. For events, weddings, and pedestrian-only applications, this is almost always the most cost-effective choice.

Between those two extremes sit products like EuroMats and PowerTrax 20, which handle light vehicles such as 4x4s and small plant at a mid-range price point. And then there are specialist items: protection ramps for bridging kerbs and service trenches, fencing and barriers for site demarcation, and event furniture for bar tables and benches. Each carries its own hire rate.

The key rule: match the product to the load. Paying for capacity you do not need wastes money. Under-specifying where it counts wastes far more.

Quantity: scale changes the maths

Hiring 20 panels costs less in absolute terms than hiring 200, but the per-panel rate often drops with larger orders. Transport costs get spread across more units. Installation crews, if needed, become more efficient at scale. A full artic load of trackway going to one site is more cost-effective per panel than sending out a part-load for a small order.

That said, do not be tempted to over-order "just in case." The right approach is to work out exactly what you need. A site assessment from the GT Trax team will map out access routes, vehicle turning circles, and pedestrian flows so you hire what you actually require, no more, no less.

Hire duration: longer does not mean proportionally more

Most ground protection hire is priced by the week, but the rate is not a straight multiple. A one-week hire costs more per day than a four-week hire, because delivery, collection, and cleaning are amortised over a longer period. Longer-term hires on construction projects are priced on a negotiated basis. If your project runs for several weeks, tell the hire desk upfront.

Delivery distance and logistics

Ground protection is heavy and bulky. Transporting it costs money, and the further your site is from the depot, the more that transport costs. A site 20 miles away costs less to service than one 200 miles away. GT Trax operates nationwide, from Cornwall to the Scottish Highlands, and we plan delivery routes carefully to consolidate loads and avoid unnecessary part-loads.

Site access also matters. If the delivery lorry can pull up right next to the installation area, the job is straightforward. If panels need to be carried across a pedestrian bridge or through a narrow gate, expect additional handling time and cost. Tell us about access restrictions at the quoting stage so we can plan around them.

Installation: included or extra?

For lightweight panels such as WalkOvers or LiteTrax tiles, many clients handle installation themselves. The panels are light enough to carry and the interlocking system is simple, keeping costs down.

For heavier panels like PowerTrax 60, installation labour is usually required. GT Trax can provide experienced installation crews as part of the hire package. The cost depends on the size of the job, site conditions, and how long installation and collection will take.

If you are working to a tight schedule, professional installation is worth the cost. An experienced crew can lay hundreds of metres in a day, getting your site operational faster.

Why getting the price right matters more than getting the price low

It is tempting to focus on the hire rate and pick the cheapest option. That approach backfires when the surface fails.

Rutted ground, stuck vehicles, event delays, and ground restoration costs all run into the thousands. The cost of hiring the right product is almost always a fraction of what you would spend fixing the consequences of getting it wrong. Ask any site manager who has had to tow a loaded lorry out of a bog whether they wish they had spent a bit more on the trackway. The answer is always yes.
